THE EVOLUTION OF ENGLISH WORD MEANINGS: A DIACHRONIC APPROACH INTRODUCTION
Abstract:This paper explores the historical development of word meanings in the English language through a diachronic linguistic lens. It examines how and why semantic shifts occur over time, categorizes types of semantic change, and highlights examples from different historical stages of English. The study reveals that socio-cultural, psychological, and linguistics factors are major contributors to the evolution of meaning. Understanding these changes provides insight into the dynamic nature of language and the influence of historical context on communication.
