Supporting Integration of Motivational Interviewing in HIV Service Organizations

This resource bundle was developed to help AIDS Education and Training Centers (AETCs), Addiction Technology Transfer Centers (ATTCs), and other training and technical assistance (TTA) providers assist HIV service organizations with implementing and sustaining motivational interviewing (MI). MI is a person-centered approach that helps individuals explore and strengthen their own motivation for behavior change. MI has a strong evidence base for promoting behavior change, particularly in reducing substance use—a major barrier to HIV care engagement and retention. Given the high prevalence of substance use disorders among people with HIV, AETCs and ATTCs play a key role in helping HIV service organizations (HSOs) implement this evidence-based approach to improve outcomes across the HIV care continuum. The tools provided here are designed to meet organizations where they are, offering foundational knowledge, skill-building resources, and strategic guidance for long-term integration of MI into practice. Specifically, the tools aim to help organizations implement the MI Brief Intervention (MIBI) and sustain it over time using the Implementation & Sustainment Facilitation (ISF) Strategy.
