Red Queen vs White Queen Driven Changes in Aviation
This study investigates the dual influence of competitive market dynamics (“Red Queen”) and collaborative regulatory frameworks (“White Queen”) on the aviation industry, drawing metaphorical inspiration from Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass. It constructs a conceptual framework that explores how these forces interact to shape innovation, safety, sustainability, and strategic adaptation across the sector. Through a mixed-methods approach incorporating literature review, case studies, bibliometric and thematic analyses, the study examines how reactive innovation and competitive pressure (Red Queen) coexist with proactive regulatory alignment and long-term planning (White Queen). The findings highlight that sustainable evolution in aviation depends on a hybrid strategic balance—where agility in technology and market response is matched with regulatory compliance, collaboration, and scenario planning. Case studies of firms like Delta, Boeing, Airbus, and Emirates reinforce the synergistic value of integrating forecasting and scenario-based planning to adapt to dynamic challenges. While the study’s qualitative scope limits generalizability, it offers foundational insights into managing ambidexterity in aviation strategy. This research provides actionable implications for industry stakeholders and policymakers aiming to harness the combined power of market responsiveness and regulatory foresight in shaping the future of global aviation.
