The laboratory investigation on the prevalence of pregnant women with severe anemia based on Hb evaluation in Dhusamareb district

Abstract Anemia is a significant public health concern, particularly among pregnant women, due to its impact on maternal and fetal health. This study investigates the prevalence of severe anemia among pregnant women in Dhusamareb District, Somalia, based on hemoglobin (Hb) evaluation from January 2023 to May 2024. The research explores the educational, economic, and nutritional factors contributing to anemia during pregnancy. Using a cross-sectional study design, data was collected through structured questionnaires and laboratory investigations. The findings indicate that low educational levels, poor dietary intake, and financial constraints significantly contribute to anemia prevalence. Additionally, factors such as inadequate iron supplementation, parasitic infections, and limited access to healthcare services exacerbate the condition. The study also highlights that pregnant women from low socioeconomic backgrounds are more vulnerable to anemia due to insufficient nutrition and poor healthcare access. The study underscores the need for targeted interventions, including improved maternal nutrition programs, community-based anemia awareness campaigns, and strengthened healthcare services for pregnant women. Recommendations include enhancing iron supplementation programs, increasing access to prenatal healthcare, and promoting balanced diets through educational initiatives. These findings provide valuable insights for healthcare professionals, policymakers, and organizations working to improve maternal health in Somalia.
