Novel Foods - Challenges in Labelling, Testing, and Processing Technology
This study examines the UK requirements for labeling, testing, and processing novel foods, providing background on the evolution of novel foods and assessing government regulations, labeling, safety testing, and processing technology. A systematic review of 57 studies on novel food regulations and 31 studies on policy documents finds that compliance with labeling rules, rigorous safety testing, and advanced processing techniques are critical for novel foods to be acceptable and successfully reach the UK market. The research shows that novel foods face more stringent regulatory requirements compare to conventional foods to ensure they are safe, labeled properly, and pose no public health risks before being allowed into the UK. Overall, the unique regulatory framework for novel foods in the UK manages their entry into the UK market through comprehensive regulations for labeling, testing, and processing that differ from conventional food requirements. The study provides insight into how the specialized novel food system aims to enable innovation while protecting consumers.
