Vicuña Mackenna, Benjamin (1831–1886)
This is a biography of Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna, a Chilean liberal whose life bridged revolutionary ideals and pragmatic modernisation. A scion of elite Hispanic and Irish republican lineages, he became a journalist, historian, urban planner, and political agitator who championed federal democracy and social reform. Exiled for his activism, he travelled across Europe and the Americas, absorbing English and continental influences that shaped his republicanism and scientific modernity. His role as Chile’s secret agent during the Spanish-South American War accentuated his commitment to pan-American solidarity.
