Academic Communication in the AI's Era: A Case Study of AI-Powered Language Tools in EFL Higher Education

The purpose of this research is to understand way in which the AI tools can facilitate academic writing as well as communication development among the EFL students. As the use of AI technologies like ChatGPT continue to grow and expand in this and future semesters, this research examines the impact of these technologies on the students’ writing, grammatical correctness, and performance. Using a qualitative approach, the study uses secondary data collection through the analysis of academic papers on AI tools used in education and the same papers will be analyzed using discourse analysis to draw conclusions from the data collected. The research shows that AI interactives enhance students’ language proficiency, coherence, and interest. However, there are also risks that stem from overuse of such tools and potential inaccuracies resulting from AI context sensing, which may impede critical thinking skills and the ability to write independently. The importance of teachers is underlined in the context of explaining to the students how to rely on the offered AI tools while at the same time developing the necessary skills themselves. The results of the study argue that, although online AI resources provide support to students to complete assignments more effectively, their use should be controlled and integrated for improving the overall learning experience. This work puts emphasis on the necessity of developing AI literacy for learners and teachers to fully harness the profitability of AI technologies and minimize possible negative effects.
