Runderen in agroforestry context: welke regelgeving is van tel?

Author & Project details This document was written by Bert Reubens as part of the Interreg Project CAMBIUM: Cambium: boslandbouw integraal - Agroforestry The article is shown online through: Runderen in agroforestry context: welke regelgeving is van tel? - Agroforestry Content In this document, we provide an overview of the regulations applicable to starting to keep cattle in an agroforestry (forestry) context in 2023. Such a combination of agroforestry with animals in the pasture is also called silvopastoral agriculture. This document is structured according to the various steps from purchasing or raising the cattle (and planting the trees) to slaughter. The emphasis in this specific sheet is on the cattle, and more specifically on cattle that have access to an outdoor run. The starting point is that trees and/or shrubs are also planted in the outdoor run. However, general regulations regarding agroforestry, planting and felling of trees, destination of land, etc. are not discussed, but are thoroughly described in other information sheets from Agroforestry Flanders, to which reference is made in this document. Aspects regarding the processing and marketing of beef, milk or dairy products are also not explicitly addressed in this information sheet, but where relevant, reference is also made to sources. The applicable regulations are often linked to multiple policy areas, bodies and themes. This is one of the reasons why it becomes unclear and confusing for the users. That is why we try to provide a picture as comprehensive as possible. Further on in this document, we differentiate the regulations according to the body that imposes them. An overview and brief description of the scope of the relevant regulatory bodies and control bodies can be found in the following paragraph of this information sheet. It is by no means the intention of this information sheet to be complete concerning, for example, all legislation regarding the start-up of a company, tax obligations, etc. Only when there are points of attention or clarifications that apply specifically to the keeping of cattle or the processing and marketing of beef or milk, are they included. Keeping cattle in agroforestry systems is currently limited only in Flanders and is characterised by its ecological nature, often small-scale application and/or the diversity of production. These characteristics can impact the feasibility and consequences of certain regulations for the users. Uncertainty and fear of innovative concepts are often hidden between the letter and the practice. This leads to business uncertainty for pioneers. Where relevant, we also emphasise this in this document. Conclusion With this document, we hope to provide correct and clear insights into all laws and regulations relevant to those planning to keep cattle in a silvopastoral system.
