Advancing National Security: Greece's Strategic Plan for Next-Gen MILSATCOM Systems

This article proposes a plan for the development of the Greek satellite system (GR-MILSATCOM). The benefits of such a project would be significant for strengthening national (and international) Defence, Security and Economy. Such a system will also be a catalyst for the Hellenic Air Force (HAF) in transitioning to the new space era, enhancing its operational capabilities and the resilience of its communications. Greece currently seeks to acquire its own satellite system, primarily for military and governmental communications. Greece aims to design, develop, launch, and operate a telecommunications satellite equipped with advanced technologies and strong encryption, operating in a geostationary orbit (GEO). This satellite will provide continuous wide-area coverage and connectivity to the national Armed Forces (and governmental entities) in various operational theaters1. While existing national telecommunications infrastructures are capable, they have inherent limitations that hinder nations from operating with maximum efficiency and security. A modern SATCOM system can enhance existing national military communication networks, ensuring fast, reliable, and secure data transmission during military operations. Additionally, it can provide the desired nations’ autonomy in the field of SATCOM while contributing to technological superiority and economic growth.
