Sustainable Development Goals in India: Challenges and the Road Ahead
Abstract: Economies all over the world are deliberating and unifying their efforts to move towards sustainable means of development. The negative impacts can be seen in the form of global warming, climate change and in recent times threat to the very existence of the human race and other forms of life on earth. Continuous depletion of natural resources leading to alteration of the ecological balance has made Governments ponder on finding means to move towards sustainable development. There has been a conscious and steady movement with the emphasis now shifting from the Millennium Development Goals towards attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are aimed at covering a broader range of interrelated issues. This would require adapting newer goals and targets harmonising them with challenges and resource capacities. This study provides insights into the seventeen goals envisaged as Sustainable Development Goals and the challenges in implementing them in the Indian context. Keywords: Millennium Development Goals (MDG), Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Ecological Balance, Sustainability
