Ментальна свідомість VS інтуїції та «знання крові» в есе Д. Г. Лоуренса «Introduction to These Paintings»
In 1929, D. H. Lawrence, an English writer, poet, and literary critic, published an essay called “Introduction to These Paintings”. His aim was to compare the works of two famous artists, Cezanne and Fantin-Latour. The author of the article chose paintings that had thematic similarities; both paintings depicted apples on the table. The title of Cezanne’s painting was “Four Apples,” and the title of Fantin-Latour’s painting was “Apples in a Basket and on a Table”. The main idea which was represented by Lawrence was that Cezanne’s painting displayed the real apples, “appleness” as it was called by the author. At the same time, the painting by Fantin-Latour presented the apples as if it was made by a camera. Lawrence called it “Kodak-vision”. These ideas coincided with the author's point of view concerning intuition and self-consciousness, which were presented in Cezanne’s paintings, and mental consciousness presented by the works of Fantin-Latour.
