Electrooxidation of Carboxylic Acids on Boron Doped Electrodes for Pyrolysis Oil Upgradation Application

Presented at the 1st Electrochemical Conversion National Symposium (ECCNS) At the 1st Electrochemical Conversion National Symposium held on May 21st in the Netherlands, this work was presented from EBIO WP2 research on the oxidation of mixed carboxylic acid streams using boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes as a promising approach for the electrochemical upgradation of pyrolysis oil. Pyrolysis oil, derived from biomass, holds great potential as a sustainable source of chemicals and fuels. However, its complex composition and high oxygen content present challenges for its direct use. This work explores how electrochemical oxidation on BDD electrodes can selectively remove carboxylic acids, enhancing the oil’s quality for further processing. This research contributes to the broader discussion on electrochemical conversion technologies for sustainable fuel and chemical production. The symposium provided an excellent platform to engage with experts, share insights, and explore the future of electrochemical-driven sustainability in energy and materials science.
