Creating an Interactive 3D Virtual Learning Space to Foster Adults' Media and Information Literacy: A Case Study
This eBook, "Creating an Interactive 3D Virtual Learning Space to Foster Adults’ Media and Information Literacy: A Case Study," presents the insights and outcomes of the ALiVE project, an Erasmus+ initiative aimed at enhancing media and information literacy (MIL) among adults over 45 through innovative digital education. The project addresses the growing need for older adults to navigate an increasingly complex media landscape, combat misinformation, and develop critical digital skills. The publication details the development and implementation of a unique 3D Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), specifically designed to engage adult learners in an immersive, interactive experience. Six learning stations were created, each focused on key competencies in media literacy, digital content creation, online safety, and digital citizenship. The content was structured to support non-formal education settings and to empower adult learners to critically assess and engage with digital information. The eBook also explores the methodological framework that guided the project's design and shares the results of pilot tests conducted in five European countries: Austria, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, and Spain. Each pilot adopted tailored approaches to integrate the ALiVE platform into adult education programs, and feedback from participants and educators is analysed to highlight the platform's impact. Key outcomes include increased awareness of MIL, improved digital literacy skills, and an understanding of how immersive technology can enhance adult education. The eBook also provides a roadmap for educational institutions, policymakers, and other stakeholders looking to implement similar digital learning tools in their programs. This publication is intended to be a resource for those interested in the intersection of digital literacy, adult education and the potential of 3D virtual environments for learning. It offers both practical insights and a case study of how innovative approaches can bridge the digital divide for adults and promote active, informed participation in today’s digital world.
