The Future of Financial Infrastructure: Lessons from Brazil's Innovation for the United States

Brazil has emerged as a leader in financial innovation, especially in the areas of asset tokenization, openfinance, and real-time payments. This report examines fintech advancements in Brazil, including Pix, areal-time, government-backed payment system; Open Finance, which enhances financial data sharing anduser control; and Drex, a central bank digital currency (CBDC) designed for asset tokenization and smartcontracts. The report contrasts these developments with the fragmented U.S. banking system, where Pix'suniversality is absent from payment systems like FedNow, Venmo, and Zelle. This study illustrates howBrazil's strategy promotes efficiency, competition, and financial inclusion through a comparativeexamination. Additionally, it examines how public-private cooperation contributes to financialmodernization. The results imply that U.S. officials may learn a lot from Brazil's approach about how toestablish a more technologically sophisticated and inclusive financial system.
