The Socio-Economic impact of EL-Nino Floods on small Farmers in Kismaayo district at lower Jubba-SOMALIA.
Abstract This study examines the socio-economic impact of El Niño-induced floods on small-scale farmers in the northern part of Kismaayo District, Lower Jubba, Somalia. The research aims to assess the causes of floods, identify affected communities, and explore mitigation strategies employed by both farmers and authorities. Utilizing an explanatory research design, the study collected data from a sample of 80 respondents, including farmers, residents, and merchants, selected using Slovin’s formula. The findings reveal that 52% of respondents believe the lack of infrastructure such as dams and reservoirs exacerbates the impact of floods, while 33.3% highlight the challenges posed by destroyed roads and bridges, limiting transportation and market access. The study concludes that flooding leads to extensive damage to crops, livestock losses, property destruction, and economic isolation, severely impacting agricultural productivity and livelihoods. Recommendations include the construction of flood control infrastructure, early warning systems, and farmer education on riverbank protection. Implementing these measures will enhance resilience and mitigate the recurring socio-economic consequences of flooding in the region.
