THE INTERNATIONALIZATION OF THE NATIVE LANGUAGE

Abstract The internationalization of a native language is a matter of critical significance, particularly in the context of safeguarding national identity and contributing meaningfully to the cultural mosaic of the globalized world. This process refers to the deliberate and systematic promotion of a national language beyond its domestic boundaries, facilitating its functional presence in diverse international arenas. For smaller linguistic communities especially, internationalization is not merely a cultural aspiration but a strategic necessity to ensure linguistic vitality in an increasingly interconnected global environment. In recent years, the Azerbaijani language has witnessed a growing international presence, extending its utility and influence across multiple sectors, including but not limited to science, education, technology, politics, culture, economics, and tourism. This expansion is indicative of a broader national effort to elevate the language’s status within global communication networks and to enhance its role as a medium of scholarly and cultural expression on the international stage. The responsibility for advancing the global profile of the Azerbaijani language largely falls on key national institutions, most notably the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, and the State Committee on Work with Diaspora. These bodies play a pivotal role in implementing language policy, promoting Azerbaijani culture abroad, and facilitating transnational linguistic exchange through various projects, initiatives, and collaborations. This research critically examines the principal methods and strategic directions aimed at increasing the global visibility and communicative capacity of the Azerbaijani language. A particular focus is placed on the role of digital platforms—educational, cultural, literary, informational, and social mediain creating spaces for Azerbaijani language use in virtual environments. These platforms serve not only as vehicles for dissemination but also as tools for linguistic innovation and engagement with younger, tech-savvy generations. Moreover, the study underscores the necessity of enriching the terminological base of the Azerbaijani language, particularly in scientific and technological domains, in order to ensure its adaptability and competitiveness in global discourse. It also highlights the importance of integrating the language into contemporary technological infrastructures, developing high-quality educational resources, and implementing targeted promotional strategies in multiple foreign languages to reach broader international audiences. In sum, the internationalization of the Azerbaijani language is a multifaceted and long-term endeavor that requires coordinated efforts across governmental, academic, and cultural institutions. It demands not only strategic planning and resource allocation but also a vision that aligns linguistic development with global cultural and technological trends. As such, the process constitutes an essential component of Azerbaijan’s broader cultural diplomacy and soft power initiatives in the 21st century.
