Conceptual Design and Topology Optimization of a Compliant Morphing Flap for Next Generation Hybrid-Electric Regional Aircraft
The HERWINGT project, part of the EU-funded Clean Aviation initiative, is exploring innovative hybrid-electric technologies to reduce the environmental impact of short-range aviation. Among its cutting-edge developments is a high-aspect ratio wing featuring a compliant morphing flap, designed by the Adaptive Structures Department at CIRA. This concept aims to enhance aerodynamic performance and lower fuel consumption in regional and short-range aircraft. Through advanced topology optimization of composite materials, the team has achieved significant progress in designing a camber morphing flap, which will be tested on a single-bay ground demonstrator. In that frame, Dr. Maria Chiara Noviello (CIRA - Italian Aerospace Research Centre) presented the paper entitled "Conceptual Design and Topology Optimization of a Compliant Morphing Flap for the Next Generation Hybrid-Electric Regional Aircraft" which is a product of team work conducted alongside Ignazio Dimino, Salvatore Ameduri, and Antonio Concilio.
