Naadi Shuddhi Methods in Hatha Yoga (Classical and Scientific Perspective)
Nāḍī Śuddhi, or the purification of subtle energy channels, is a foundational practice in Haṭha Yogaaimed at preparing the body and mind for higher states of consciousness. Classical texts such as theHaṭha Yoga Pradīpikā and Gheraṇḍa Saṁhitā describe techniques like alternate nostril breathing (NāḍīŚodhana), Bhastrikā, and Kapālabhātī as effective means of balancing the prāṇic flow through Idā,Piṅgalā, and Suṣumṇā nāḍīs. These practices purify internal pathways, facilitating the awakening ofKuṇḍalinī and spiritual progression. From a scientific standpoint, research supports the efficacy of thesemethods in improving respiratory function, reducing stress, balancing the autonomic nervous system, and enhancing neurochemical responses, such as increased GABA activity. This paper explores NāḍīŚuddhi through both traditional yogic philosophy and modern scientific findings, highlighting itsrelevance in promoting holistic health and emotional balance. The integration of ancient wisdom withneuroscience affirms the timeless utility of Nāḍī purification practices.
