Capacity building of a scientific research organization in relation to nuclear safety in Serbia

Nikola Tesla Institute of Electrical Engineering University of Belgrade, as a modern scientific research organization and the leader in the Republic of Serbia in the field of power engineering provides solutions for current problems in power engineering and strategic analysis, as well as directing future research and development of electric power industry, electric power systems and industrial plants. The Institute is dedicated to achieving research excellence in its fields of activity and actively contributes to the work of international research organizations over more than 40 years. Since the national leadership has shown interest in the inclusion of nuclear energy in the national electric power system in the foreseeable future, and that one group of experts from the Institute attended courses in nuclear energy during their undergraduate and graduate studies, it indicates the existence of a basis for capacity building in the field of nuclear power. This capacity might be of prime importance in the future as technical support for nuclear safety and security to the national regulatory body. The paper presents data on the existing structure, available resources and capacities of the organization which are the starting point for building and maintaining expert skills in relation to safety.
