United for humanity: developing a collaborative model based on crowdsourcing to engage volunteers in crisis recovery campaigns

Efficient crisis management and recovery efforts rely on clear communication and collab-oration among emergency response agencies, public institutions, and the broader commu-nity. This study addresses the challenge of bridging the communication and coordinationgap during crises by leveraging crowdsourcing platforms to engage volunteers in digitalcampaigns for humanitarian aid. The primary objective is to develop and validate acollaborative context model that promotes public engagement in crisis recovery throughvolunteer tasks. This research explores the challenges of crowd volunteering, the successof digital humanitarian campaigns, and the development of a taxonomy for organizingvolunteering tasks. The proposed methodology involves an exploratory study of crowd-sourcing in crisis communication, the creation of a task distribution algorithm, and theintegration of the engagement model into the Contask platform. A case study about therecovery of community affected by Rio Grande do Sul floods, planned as future work, will be conducted to validate the model and assess its impact on community recovery. The study provides practical guidelines for campaign developers and highlights the keycontextual factors that enhance volunteer participation in digital humanitarian efforts.
