Assessment of the testing results in the Case Study of Athens

Athens is the capital of Greece and of the Attica region, as well as the largest city of Greece, and is one of the largest economic hubs in Southern Europe. The population of the wider metropolitan area of Athens is approximately four (4) million inhabitants, making Athens the eighth largest urban area in the European Union. The Municipality of Athens (Athens city centre) has a population of more than 600000 inhabitants and a land area of more than 38 km2. Due to the high density of the population, Athens faces severe congestion problems due to the rising demand for car trips and the lack of coordination between modes. As a Case Study in TANGENT project, Athens focused on identifying the efficiency of network-wide Traffic Management Strategies towards overall better performance of the operation of the network. Three (3) TANGENT services have been applied in the Case Study of Athens. Service 1 deals with demand prediction and Anomaly detection in multi-sourced traffic data. Service 2 deals with optimising the operation of public transport, as well as with investigating the importance of connected vehicles in network wide traffic management. Finally, Service 3 leads to the application of network wide Traffic Management Strategies in predefined scenarios in the Case Study of Athens. The investigation of the TANGENT Services, and the accompanied subsystems, allows for proving the importance of network wide Traffic Management Strategies in both improving the operational performance of urban transport networks, and mitigating the impacts of planned and unplanned disturbances in the operation of urban transport networks. The remainder of this Deliverable is structured as follows: Section 1 introduces the present Deliverable. Section 2 acts as a description of the Case Study of Athens. There, the reference network the baseline scenario, the unplanned event, and the planned event are described. Additionally, there is a short description of the TANGENT Services and the accompanied subsystems evaluated in the framework of the Case Study of Athens. In Section 3, the testing of the subsystems is further investigated and described. Finally, Section 4 provides some lessons learned and Section 5 includes the concluding remarks of the present Deliverable.
