A Software Search Interface for Heliophysics & Space Physics

Currently, there exists no adequate interface to search on Heliophysics software like exists for publications. Thus, the newly awarded Heliophysics Software Search Interface (HSSI) from the NASA ROSES 2023 call seeks to improve upon Heliophysics software findability, discoverability, accessibility, citability, and searchability. In doing so, we will further the transparency and inclusiveness of Heliophysics software. The HSSI will allow users to come to one landing page to search for software related to their scientific tasks, starting with software packages contained within the Python in Heliophysics community (PyHC)[1], and eventually expanding out to Heliophysics code in other programming languages and software areas not covered yet in PyHC. Along with the easy search interface, we will also design and implement a software metadata structure for Heliophysics software registration and add a RestAPI to each. To encourage adoption from the community, information for the search interface and software metadata structure will be sourced from community discussions and usability testing. Lastly, in the spirit of reducing duplication of effort and collaboration with other science disciplines, the HSSI will build off NASA Goddard’s Exoplanet Modeling and Analysis Center (EMAC)[2], as well as the Heliophysics System Observatory Connect (HSOConnect)[3], and the current PyHC website search interface and supporting metadata. Additionally, open repositories such as Zenodo[4] and existing resource search capabilities such as the ADS[5] will be used for inspiration. This talk will present an introduction to the HSSI and plans moving forward now that funding has been received to begin work in October 2024. Abstract
