The impact of undernourishment on the mother and child
Abstract Undernourishment remains a critical public health issue affecting both maternal and child health, particularly in resource-limited settings. This study examines the impact of undernourishment on mothers and children at Banadir Hospital, Mogadishu, Somalia. The research assesses the prevalence, causes, and health consequences of maternal and child malnutrition, with a focus on its short-term and long-term effects. Using a cross-sectional study design, data was collected through structured questionnaires and interviews with mothers and healthcare professionals. The findings reveal that food insecurity, poverty, inadequate maternal education, and limited healthcare access significantly contribute to undernourishment. Additionally, undernourished mothers face higher risks of pregnancy complications, anemia, and poor birth outcomes, while their children experience low birth weight, stunted growth, and weakened immunity. The study highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions, including improved maternal nutrition programs, enhanced healthcare services, and community-based nutritional support. Recommendations include strengthening hospital nutrition programs, increasing public health awareness, and implementing policies to ensure food security for vulnerable populations. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, healthcare providers, and organizations working to improve maternal and child health outcomes in Somalia.
