Narratives of Grade 8 Students on Extracurricular Activities in Public Secondary High Schools
Beyond the classroom walls, extracurricular activities ignite passions, foster growth, and shape the next generation of leaders, innovators, and changemakers. However, balancing academic responsibilities with extracurricular pursuits can be daunting. This study explores the experiences and coping strategies of grade 8 students engaged in extracurricular activities. Through a qualitative phenomenological study, the researcher was able to gather unique narratives about the experiences and coping strategies regarding extra-curricular activities. The participants were ten (10) grade 8 students from a secondary school from the division of Tagum City. Through in-depth interviews and focus-group discussions, three recurring themes emerged as student experiences: conflicting demands, time constraints and overload, and emotional wellness. Additionally, three themes were identified as coping strategies: goal-setting, soliciting guidance, and personal drive and resilience. The study also uncovered three insight-driven themes: empowerment and resilience, growth and development opportunities, and supportive environment and resources. The findings highlight the significant role extracurricular activities play in students’ lives, showcasing their determination to pursue their goals despite challenges. This study underscores the importance of extracurricular activities in student development and the efforts students make to overcome obstacles.
