Dataset for: "Application of the Effective Critical Plane approach for the fatigue assessment of ductile cast iron under multiaxial and non-proportional loading conditions"
This record contains the raw and processed fatigue data that underpin the publication Chiocca A., Pedranz M., Zanini F., et al.Application of the Effective Critical Plane approach for the fatigue assessment of ductile cast iron under multiaxial and non-proportional loading conditions, International Journal of Fatigue 192 (2025) 108716. 1. File naming convention Each dataset is a tab-separated text file whose name encodes the full test configuration: <Method>_<LoadType>_<SpecimenType>_PSI<PhaseDeg>_LAMB<λ>_R<stress-ratio>.txt Token Meaning (example) Method ECP variant: SWT (Smith-Watson-Topper) or FS (Fatemi–Socie) LoadType UNI (uniaxial tension / compression), TORS (pure torsion), MULTI (combined axial–torsional) SpecimenType PLAIN, BLUNT, SHARP (notch geometry) PSI<PhaseDeg> Axial–torsional phase shift in degrees (PSI0, PSI45, PSI90) LAMB<λ> Biaxiality ratio λ = τmax/σmax (LAMB1, LAMB2) R<stress-ratio> Stress (or shear) ratio R (R-1, R0.1, R0.5) Example: SWT_MULTI_BLUNT_PSI0_LAMB2_R-1.txt stores Smith-Watson-Topper data for a blunt-notched specimen tested in proportional multiaxial loading (phase 0°), biaxiality ratio 2, stress ratio –1. 2. Column definitions Column Name Units Description 1 Nf_exp – Experimental number of cycles to failure 2 ECP_factor – Effective Critical Plane damage parameter (variant as in filename) 3 Nf_pred – Predicted number of cycles to failure from the calibrated ECP model All stresses used in the underlying calculations are expressed in MPa; cycles are absolute counts. 3. Experimental overview (brief) Material: EN-GJS-600-3 ductile cast iron; chemical composition and tensile properties in Table 1 of the paper. Test rigs: Axial fatigue – Rumul Testronic resonant machine (~150 Hz) Torsion & multiaxial – Walter + Bai LFV100-T1000-HH servo-hydraulic rig (15–20 Hz) Programme: proportional (ψ = 0°) and non-proportional (ψ = 45°, 90°) loading; λ = 1 and 2; R = –1, 0.1, 0.5. Post-processing: stresses were volumetrically averaged over control radii 0.14 mm (SWT) or 0.12 mm (FS) before computing the maximum ECP factor and pairing it to the corresponding experimental life. 4. Re-use and reproducibility MATLAB scripts implementing both ECP variants are available at https://github.com/achiocca1/ECP (MIT licence).
