The Impact of poverty on criminal Behaviour

Abstract: This study examines the impact of poverty on criminal behavior, exploring how socio-economic deprivation influences the propensity for engaging in criminal activities. Poverty is often linked to a range of social issues, including inadequate access to education, employment opportunities, and basic necessities, which can create environments conducive to criminal behavior. This research synthesizes existing literature and empirical studies to understand the multifaceted relationship between poverty and crime. Key findings indicate that individuals living in poverty are more likely to commit crimes due to factors such as economic desperation, social exclusion, and limited access to legitimate means of achieving financial stability. Additionally, the study highlights the role of systemic inequalities and the failure of social institutions in exacerbating the cycle of poverty and crime. The paper also considers the implications of these findings for policy development, suggesting that comprehensive poverty alleviation programs and targeted interventions in education and employment are crucial in mitigating the impact of poverty on criminal behavior. By addressing the root causes of poverty, society can reduce crime rates and promote a more just and equitable social structure.
