Integrating AI with Institutional Repositories
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming institutional repositories, offering new ways to manage content, improve user experiences, and streamline workflows. This presentation will explore practical AI applications in repositories, including content summarization, metadata generation, chatbots, and transcription. The session will begin by examining how AI can automatically summarize content, providing users with quick insights into documents without the need for a full read-through. AI-driven metadata generation will also be addressed, demonstrating how it can accelerate the process of tagging and organizing content, improving searchability and overall access to materials. AI’s role in transcribing audio-visual content will also be highlighted, increasing accessibility by making such materials searchable and more usable for research and education. Additionally, in the near future, AI-powered chatbots capable of interacting with users and assisting in repository navigation will be discussed. These chatbots will leverage their understanding of repository content to answer queries and guide users to relevant materials. The presentation will also cover key concerns associated with AI in repositories, such as data privacy, copyright management, and the risk of AI-generated misinformation, commonly referred to as hallucinations. These challenges underscore the importance of careful oversight and ethical considerations in AI integration. Attendees will leave with an understanding of how AI can enhance institutional repositories while being mindful of the challenges and risks involved.
