Smerinthus tokyonis Matsumura 1921

Smerinthus tokyonis Matsumura, 1921 [东ân天ë] (Figures 10–11) Smerinthus tokyonis Matsumura, 1921, Thousand Insects Japan (Additam.) 4: 751. TL: ‘ Tokyo, Honshu [Japan]’ Diagnosis. Male (Figure 10A–B): Similar to S. caecus, but upperside of body and wings browner. Forewing shorter, apex blunter, edge smoother, with slight protrusion outward on vein M 3. Upperside colour as in S. caecus but darker; pinkish area from basal to medial area faded. Hindwing similar to S. caecus, but black ocellus near tornus larger and complete with a small greyish-blue circle. Underside same as S. caecus, with large brown patch near tornus. Female: Similar to male, but wings broader, ground pattern darker and more extensive, antennae much slenderer. Male genitalia (Figure 11A–D): Similar to S. szechuanus, but uncus slender and curved downward, gnathos slender and straight. Valva narrower and longer. Sacculus almost the same as S. szechuanus, with a sharply pointed harpe. Phallus longer and slenderer than S. szechuanus, apical process markedly constricted basally and recurved anteriorly, with two separate teeth. Female genitalia: Unknown in this study. Distribution. Endemic to Japan. Biological notes. This species was collected in middle to high elevation temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest, attracted to light at night.
