Anthropology is the science of man, says Bhaktavacala Bharathi. The term anthropology is the equivalent of the word ‘anthropology’ in English. This word is derived from the Greek words ‘anthropos’ and ‘logos’. Art is considered to be the foremost of the things that bring happiness to man. With its attraction, art is integrated into everyone’s life and works with close companionship in increasing happiness if it occurs in that life and greatly reducing suffering if it occurs. Art is to be mixed with a person’s life and play a major role in all stages of his life and always make its presence known. During the Sangam period, music and the arts were highly appreciated. Artists were highly valued. Among these artists, Koothan, Panan, Porunan and Viraliyar are notable. The purpose of this article is to explain from an anthropological perspective how the lives of the people among them were structured.
