Change Management in Construction in the Context of 4IR

Abstract: Change management in the construction industry is essential in promoting the evolving advancement of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). This review investigated change management and 4IR technologies, emphasizing the challenges, opportunities, and best practices to support integrating innovative technologies into construction projects. By focusing on existing literature, this review sheds light on the need for effective change management and its importance in maximizing the benefits of 4IR while addressing key challenges like resistance to change, skills gaps, and interoperability issues. Through a comprehensive analysis, the review found the significance of change management principles in enabling 4IR technology adoption in construction. The review presented case studies such as Skanska’s BIM implementation and Cross rail’s IoT sensor utilization, which demonstrated successful change management integration and 4IR technology implementation, contributing to improved project efficiency, collaboration, quality, and safety. 4IR technology also reshaped the construction sector, highlighting its benefits in enhancing productivity, efficiency, and adaptability. However, challenges, including change resistance, gaps in digital literacy, and data security issues, remain the key problem. Nonetheless, this review found opportunities for innovation and agility in construction by adopting agile methodologies, digital twin technologies, and stakeholder engagement. In conclusion, this review emphasizes the critical role of effective change management in navigating the complexities of 4IR adoption in construction. By highlighting best practices and addressing challenges, construction firms can harness the transformative ability of 4IR technologies to drive efficiency, collaboration, and sustainability in the industry. Keywords: Change Management, Construction Sector, 4IR. JEL Classification Number: F31, F41
