Investigating the Correlation Between Sports Science Rankings and Olympic Medal Success: A Focus on Gender Equality and Performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics

Our study investigates the influence of scientific innovations in sports practice on the medal rankings of countries participating in the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, explicitly focusing on inclusivity and gender equality. Innovations in sports science, driven by advanced technologies, provide unprecedented data and insights that enable personalized training strategies, pushing the boundaries of athletic performance. The research aims to explore the relationship between the implementation of scientific advancements in sports and their impact on medal outcomes, emphasizing inclusivity and gender representation. A multistage methodology ensured a comprehensive dataset. Bibliometric analysis of highly cited sports science publications (2001–2024) was conducted using Scopus, Clarivate Analytics, Google Scholar, and the webometrics database. Advanced AI tools, including perplexity.ai, enhanced data precision. A Pearson correlation test examined the relationship between rankings of top sports science countries and medal counts at the Paris Games (p < 0.05), with particular attention to female athletes’ performances. A custom Python script was used to compute correlations and generate visual data representations. The findings reveal a strong correlation between robust sports science infrastructures and athletic success, especially among female athletes. Countries such as the United States and Australia, characterized by top-ranked sports science programs, high research output, and significant funding, consistently achieve higher medal counts. This research underscores the critical role of gender equality in enhancing competitive success and emphasizes the importance of audience engagement in promoting equity within sports science. The results highlight the global relevance of sports science and its implications for fostering inclusivity and excellence in athletic performance. Investing in sports science focusing on gender equality is essential for driving competitive success and advancing the field worldwide. This study provides a foundation for future research and policy development aimed at enhancing the role of scientific innovations in promoting inclusivity and empowering all athletes on a global scale.
