Emergent Phenomena in Active Colloidal Systems: A Critical Review of Recent Theoretical Advances
Active colloids, representing self-driven particles that convert ambient energy into persistentmotion, have become pivotal for advancing our understanding of nonequilibrium behavior insoft matter. This review provides an in-depth discussion of recent theoretical progress withparticular emphasis on motility-induced phase separation (MIPS), collective vortex dynamics, and chirality-induced phenomena. We examine foundational models such as Active BrownianParticles (ABPs), describe the role of hydrodynamic interactions in shaping emergent behavior, and highlight open challenges including thermodynamic consistency and multiscale coupling.By synthesizing simulation data, analytical frameworks, and experimental validations, a clearroadmap for future interdisciplinary research in active matter is proposed.
