A review of literature to identify the benefits and barriers of advanced diabetes technology use among adolescent patients diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus
Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common chronic endocrine diseases encountered by primary care providers in today’s practice setting. The incidence of newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients has increased and is expected to triple in the coming years. Complications of diabetes includes microvascular and macrovascular disease leading to a host of problems and poor outcomes for the patient diagnosed with diabetes. Vascular damage can begin early in the disease process and is often undetected until a major event occurs. T1DM is a lifelong diagnosis requiring strict adherence to therapy for glycemic control. Glycemic control is considered to be the cornerstone of therapy for prevention of complications and poor outcomes. Advanced diabetes technology such as insulin pump therapy and continuous glucose monitoring has shown to improve glycemic control among patients diagnosed with diabetes. This review of literature is aimed at identifying the benefits and barriers of advanced diabetes technology use among adolescent patients diagnosed with T1DM.
