Summary. The communication poses the problem of the representation of the past in the Romanian novel from both banks of the Prut, which appeared over a period of approximately 70 years:starting from the 60s of the last century and until the end of the second decade after 2000. The questions which it tries to answer are: what are the limits of the freedom that artistic literature/artisticfiction can allow itself in the representation of the past? Does the writer bear ethical responsibilityfor the image of the past he creates?Key words: literature, novel, image of the past, memory, artistic language.
