Macrochelidae Vitzthum 1930

MACROCHELIDAE Vitzthum, 1930 Macrochelidae includes 25 genera, but only some species of the genus Macrocheles Latreille, 1829 have been found on Passalidae: M. mammifer Berlese, 1918 (as M. tridentatus Delfinado and Baker, 1975), M. insignitus (Berlese, 1918) (syn. M. whartoni Delfinado and Baker, 1975) and M. disjunctus Delfinado and Baker, 1975 were collected from Odontotaenius disjunctus and M. insignitus was collected from Popilius sp. and undetermined Passalidae, all from the USA (Reinert 1973; Delfinado and Baker 1975) (Tables 2, 4 and 8). Delfinado and Baker considered this species to occur commonly on O. disjunctus, but Harrel and Mathis (1964) investigating mites occurring O. disjunctus in the USA and otherwise the Macrochelidae have never been collected from Passalidae.
