Thirukkural advocates communal social life
AbstractInnumerable studies, texts, interpretations etc. have been published onThirukkural from various angles. It mainly speaks of virtue for the people withoutconstruing any sign of authority as sacred. Thirukkural continues to be symbolizedas a representation of bioethics. At the same time, there is an environment wherereligions claim Thirukkural as their own. Moral thinking is produced for the benefitof power. It weaves the psychology of those under power to suit power. Thirukkuralrejects this thinking and demands adherence to the values of primitive communalsocial life. It is not only for Tamils but also for the entire world. However, there is aproblem in identifying Thiruvalluvar among world literature. The European mind, whichdoes not accept a Third World country as a great thinker, is reluctant to accept Kuralas world literature. The situation is similar in the Indian context. This article examinesthe problem of identifying Thiruvalluvar as a significant thinker of world literature andthe thought expressed in this text.
