ACOA 2024: Persistent Identifiers and Arab Research Communities
Adopting persistent identifiers (PIDs) for research outputs and resources is essential for enhancing their visibility and ensuring alignment with FAIR data principles. PIDs serve as unique, permanent identifiers that facilitate the accurate identification and citation of research outputs over time. This is crucial for Open Research, as it empowers researchers to share their work more broadly while effectively tracking its impact. However, the adoption of PIDs in the Arab world faces several challenges, including a lack of awareness about their benefits, insufficient underlying infrastructure, and financial constraints in some communities. Addressing these challenges is crucial for fostering a more open and accessible research environment in the region. In his presentation at the 2024 Meeting of the Arab Community of Open Access (ACOA), Mohamad Mostafa emphasized the importance of linking repositories with PIDs to support global discoverability and accessibility.
