Numerical modelling of wood transport processes in mountain rivers and torrents: a review
Models have been developed for decades to simulate debris flows and water floods in mountain rivers and torrents. Yet, these models typically consider only water and inorganic sediment. However, rivers and torrents in forested mountains can naturally carry large quantities of uprooted trees and trunks (i.e., large wood). But, unlike modelling debris flows and floods, modelling wood transport has only recently been attempted. The development of such models has significantly accelerated in recent years, but until now, no review has summarised their state of the art. This paper aims to introduce the different types of flows including wood in mountain rivers, explains how wood moves, describes existing models and their main characteristics, and expands on one of them, called Iber-Wood.
