Local solutions to climate challenges: case of sustainable forest and land management in the Bagou community, Northern Togo, West Africa

Context and background In response to impacts of climate change, Togolese government is increasingly engaged local populations in the conservation and management of forest and land resources. Goal and Objectives This research aims to evaluate the contribution of sustainable management practices in the Bagou terroirs of northern Togo to enhancing community resilience. Methodology The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and the qualitative analyses, which incorporates documentary reviews, field data on climatic parameters and adaptive local practices.. Results The findings indicate an upward trend in rainfall during the rainy season and a decline during the dry season, while temperatures show a warming trend of up to 0.7°C. Local populations have responded to these changes through various agroecological practices including the use of organic fertilizer (39.6%), implementation of agroforestry systems (53.9%), construction of, anti-erosion structures (34.3%), application of mulching techniques (43.2%) and the use of biopesticides (28.9%). These adaptive measures have enhanced the resilience of local communities to climate change by providing context-specific solutions aligned with local realities. Addressing major global challenges, such as climate change and carbon footprints should not detract from recognizing and supporting local approaches tailored to specific contexts. Such strategies are essential for building community resilience and ensuring climate justice.
