Evaluation of Energy Efficiency and Optimization Measures at the Tanger Med Dam in the Fahs-Anjra Province (Morocco)
In the context of Morocco’s national energy strategy aiming to improve energy efficiency across public infrastructures, this study presents a detailed energy audit and optimization plan for the Tanger Med Dam, located in the province of Fahs-Anjra. The analysis covers three years of electrical consumption data (2019–2021) across two transformer substations (50 kVA and 100 kVA), in addition to associated lighting and electromechanical systems. The audit identified several inefficiencies, including oversized subscribed power, suboptimal power factor levels, and high energy consumption from conventional lighting systems. To address these issues, targeted actions were proposed, including the adjustment of subscribed power, the installation of reactive power compensation systems, and the replacement of lighting with LED and solar-powered technologies. The proposed measures demonstrate significant potential for reducing annual energy consumption by over 50%, lowering operational costs by more than 30%, and cutting CO₂ emissions by nearly 9 tonnes per year. The study provides a replicable framework for enhancing energy efficiency in hydraulic infrastructures, aligning with national sustainability goals.
