To Perform: Listening, Transindividually
This paper explores listening as action in perception, which extends into bodily movement or evokes imaginary movement. Five cases of listening are featured: a commemoration of political event, a community dance practice, a technical object of recording music, and two encounters between technics and material on a performance stage. The cases show how embodiment registers the social history of sounds transindividually, in synchronization and transmission of common cultural memory by way of materials, tools and skills shared in making and use. Through each case, I inquire into ways of transindividual listening whereby individuals and groups co-evolve in a deliberate effort, thanks to mutual relations of transformation and to the regeneration of what is common to many.
