Advancing Ocean Equity: Understanding Injustices and Solutions for Migrant Fishers and Small-Scale Fishers in Indonesia
For her human rights capstone, Kaylee Shen explored the injustices faced by small-scale and migrant fishers in Indonesia. Through fieldwork in Central Java and legal analysis, she identified key challenges such as economic instability, lack of protections, and vulnerability to exploitation and trafficking. By comparing Indonesian and Philippine legal frameworks, Shen highlighted gaps in enforcement and support systems. Her project calls for stronger protections and policies to advance ocean equity and safeguard fisher communities. Lastly, the findings of this research were subsequently presented as part of the Stanford Symposia of Undergraduate Research and Public Service (SURPS). The content of this capstone is only accessible to users who have a valid Stanford SUNet ID.
