Mechanical properties of jammed granulate metamaterials
This thesis investigates the mechanical properties of jammed-granulate metamaterials, which utilize granular jamming, a phenomenon where loose granular particles transition into a rigid, load-bearing structure using vacuum and overpressure. The study examines how vacuum and overpressure actuation influence the stiffness and strength of metamaterial beams encapsulating different granular particles within flexible membranes. The study uses a four-point bending setup measuring deflection and load to reveal that the mechanical properties can be modified when using a vacuum or overpressure actuation, with varying lattice structures showing differences in mechanical behavior. The findings highlight the potential for developing adaptable biomedical devices with patient-specific mechanical properties, such as granular support mattresses used for patients with spinal injuries.
