Ramie (Boehmeria nivea) – a local grown raw material for textiles and fibre composites for Europe? / FRESH STORMING – a suitable process chain to establish bast fibres as textile raw material for the future?
The ramie cultivation trials in Wädenswil showed that with suitable ramie clones and only two harvests it is quite possible to keep up with or even exceed the yield of bast ribbons in the original cultivation regions. Compared to cotton with a global average fibre yield of 750 kg/ha up to 4x more ramie fibres per hectare could be obtained.
