INVESTIGATION OF PHYTOCHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS FROM EUPHORBIA ABYSSINICA (KULKUAL/ADAAMMII) ROOT AND EVALUATION OF THEIR ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY
Euphorbia abyssinica root is traditional medicine used for treatment of several bacterial and virus caused ailments. The current study was designed to identify phytochemical constituents and an antibacterial activity of E.abyssinica root. The collected root of E.abysssinica was dried and ground and extracted with ethanol for 72 hrs with occasional shaking at room temperature. The solution was removed by rotary evaporator. Then the obtained crude extract was suspended in to distilled water and the partition was carried out by petroleum ether (PE), ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and n-butanol (n-BUOH). The crude extract obtained by PE, EtOAc, and n-BuOH were subjected to phytochemical screening and the result indicated the presence of bioactive constituent such as Alkaloid, Flavonoid, Terpeniods, Glycosides, Phenols, Tannins, and Steroids. Three pure compounds which are coded Ea-1, Ea-2, and Ea-3 were isolated from ethyl acetate crude extract using column chromatography and the compounds were characterized by IR. Antibacterial activity of PE, EtOAc, and n-BuOH crude extract of E. abyssinica root were evaluated against S. pyogenes and p. aerogenosa. This activity was carried out by disc diffusion method on MHA and concentration of 50 mg, 100 mg, and 150 mg were used to test the activity. Among the three crude extract, the crude extract obtained from EtOAc indicated the susceptibility of the two bacteria’s. The anti-bacterial activity of E.abyssinica root displayed maximum inhibition zone against the growth P. aerogenosa (20-30 mm) and S. pyogenes (15- 30 mm). This indicates the presence of bioactive constituents of E. abyssinica root in EtOAc than PE and n-BuOH. The result confirmed ethno medicinal usage of the E. abyssinica root in the treatment of microbial infection 5<br>
