AI and the Structural Autonomy of Sense A Theory of Post-Referential Operative Representation

Abstract This paper introduces the theory of Structural Autonomy of Sense, which posits that contemporary representations — particularly those generated by AI — can produce real-world effects without requiring any referential anchoring to empirical facts, subjects, or events. These representations are not simulations, beliefs, or social constructs; they are formal structures whose internal coherence and systemic compatibility grant them operative legitimacy. In this post-referential epistemology, truth is replaced by structural consistency, and legitimacy arises from function, not correspondence. The paper differentiates this theory from prior frameworks such as simulacra, constructivism, or institutionalism, and supports its claims with empirical cases including predictive legal algorithms and AI-generated medical classifications. This signals a fundamental shift: the function of a representation becomes its origin, and its future consequences its validator. Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, Post-Referential Epistemology, Operative Representation, Structural Sense, Algorithmic Authority, Truth Collapse, Formal Coherence. Abstract
