Exploration of Social Perceptions of Artificial Light at Night and Policy Implications in Dare County, North Carolina
This honors thesis research uses results from the 2023 Outer Banks Field Site survey to provide comprehensive policy recommendations for municipalities within Dare County to consider as light pollution continues to increase globally. Inspired by the strong belief that ALAN in the Outer Banks should be reduced, expressed by Dare County resident and visitor survey respondents, I conducted this study to further understand various stakeholders’ motivations and values surrounding potential policy changes in outdoor lighting practices within Dare County. The end goal of my project is to provide municipalities with a catalog of relevant policy options that may resonate with their residents and visitors.
