Hints of a Dragon-Slayer episode in the ancient Egyptian Tale of Two Brothers and their folkloric implications

This paper proposes the presence of a rudimentary Dragon-Slayer episode in the ancient Egyptian Tale of Two Brothers. If correct, this would strengthen the argument that (in addition to belonging to tale-types ATU 302, 318, 707, etc.) the Tale is genuinely an example of ATU 303: The Twins or Blood Brothers. It would also suggest that the well-known ATU 300 (Dragon-Slayer) – ATU 303 symbiosis began to emerge very early (12th century BCE).

Abstract

This paper proposes the presence of a rudimentary Dragon-Slayer episode in the ancient Egyptian Tale of Two Brothers. If correct, this would strengthen the argument that (in addition to belonging to tale-types ATU 302, 318, 707, etc.) the Tale is genuinely an example of ATU 303: The Twins or Blood Brothers. It would also suggest that the well-known ATU 300 (Dragon-Slayer) – ATU 303 symbiosis began to emerge very early (12th century BCE).
