The Hidden Neurology of Overload: Executive Function, Burnout, and the Adolescent Learner
This article explores how chronic academic overload—through sustained homework demands, standardized testing, and task layering during testing periods—contributes to cognitive shutdown in adolescent students. Drawing on original survey data from 100 middle and high school students, 95% reported experiencing overwhelm leading to disengagement or complete withdrawal. This study investigates the neuropsychological basis of this phenomenon, specifically the role of executive functioning in the adolescent brain under stress, and discusses implications for educational practice and student mental health.
