Study of the dynamics of a helical vortex with use of the Local Induced Approximation

\nA problem on origin of the instability of a conical helical vortex, which manifests itself in the distortion of the original shape, the convergence of the spiral turns, and the formation of loop-like structures, preceding subsequent vortex reconnection. For modelling the phenomenon, an economical method is used to calculate the dynamics of a vortex filament based on the Local Induction Approximation. The characteristics of the instability parameters are revealed depending on the geometric characteristics of the vortex.\n

Abstract

\nA problem on origin of the instability of a conical helical vortex, which manifests itself in the distortion of the original shape, the convergence of the spiral turns, and the formation of loop-like structures, preceding subsequent vortex reconnection. For modelling the phenomenon, an economical method is used to calculate the dynamics of a vortex filament based on the Local Induction Approximation. The characteristics of the instability parameters are revealed depending on the geometric characteristics of the vortex.\n
